The home-and-home series between the U.S. and Canada wrapped up yesterday at Avaya Stadium in California. Once again Janine Beckie, Carli Lloyd and Nichelle Prince returned to action, with Beckie receiving the start for Canada, Prince entering the game as the first CanWNT substitute in the 31st minute and Lloyd subbing in for the USWNT in the 75th minute.
The USWNT took an early lead after Julie Ertz snuck in a low, skidding header past Canadian goalkeeper Stephanie Labbé off a Megan Rapinoe corner kick in the 11th minute.
The CanWNT would come back to equalize in the 50th minute after Prince, who skillfully avoided two U.S. defenders, made a nice run down the right side and sent a perfect cross on the ground her Dash teammate from the top of the six-yard box. The goal was Beckie’s seventh of the year for Canada. Beckie would later sub off in the 90th minute.
The USWNT would reclaim the lead six minutes later when Alex Morgan, after receiving a pass from Christen Press, sent one into the back post and put the U.S. up 2-1.
Lloyd would secure a USWNT victory in the 80th minute when she struck from close range after receiving a pass from Alex Morgan. The goal was Lloyd’s 98th international goal.
