The Houston Dash saw their five-game unbeaten streak come to an end on Saturday night following a 3-1 loss to San Diego Wave FC at Torero Stadium in San Diego.
Houston struck first just seven minutes into the match off of a set piece. After the initial delivery from the set piece was cleared, the ball fell to forward Ebony Salmon at the top of the penalty area. Salmon took a touch onto her right foot to create space and scored her eighth goal of the regular season when she struck it past San Diego goalkeeper Carly Telford.
Six minutes later San Diego forward Alex Morgan scored the equalizer before the 20-minute mark. The Wave took the lead in the 67th minute after Amirah Ali scored after a ball was loose in the box and the forward scored in traffic. Sofia Jakobsson scored the final goal of the night for San Diego in the 90th minute after beating two defenders and sneaking the ball into the far corner of the net.
Following Morgan’s equalizer, the Dash continued to place pressure on the San Diego back line as rookie forward Ryan Gareis drove down the left flank in the 25th minute with space to cross into the box, but two attackers narrowly missed putting the ball into the back of the net. Gareis had a shot in the 35th minute that went a foot wide of the far post for what would have been her first career NWSL goal.
Forward Maria Sanchez had a chance in the early moments of the second half with a shot that narrowly missed the far post in the 48th minute. Midfielder Marisa Viggiano nearly had her second goal of the season in the 64th minute of the match but the shot trickled wide of the far post.
Defender Caprice Dydasco made her Dash debut in the 80th minute of the game. The 29-year-old defender was acquired by the Dash on Friday from NJ/NY Gotham FC.
The Dash return to PNC Stadium on Saturday, Aug. 27 to take on the reigning NWSL Champion Washington Spirit at 7:30 p.m. CT. The match will air locally on AT&T SportsNet Southwest, streamed nationally on Paramount+ and internationally on Twitch.
