The Group Stage of Tokyo 2020 has ended. Eight of out twelve countries are moving on to the quarterfinals this Friday and all six of the Houston Dash players at the Olympic games advanced to the knockout stage.
The US Women’s National Team secured their spot in the knockout rounds with a 0-0 draw against Australia on Tuesday. After losing their first match 3-0 to Sweden and then bouncing back to score a 6-1 win over New Zealand, earning a point in their final match was enough to push them forward. Midfielder Kristie Mewis entered the match as a substitute in the 88th minute to help secure the result. The USWNT will face the Netherlands in the quarterfinals, making it a rematch of the 2019 Women’s World Cup Final.
Great Britain took on Canada in their final match of group play, with Dash players facing off against each other. Forward Rachel Daly earned the start for Great Britain and midfielder Sophie Schmidt started for Canada. The match was a lot of back and forth, with Canada finally breaking through in the 55th minute. Forward Nichelle Prince checked in as a substitute for Canada a minute before the opening goal. Great Britain answered back in the 85th minute, and the draw secured advancement for both teams.
Canada will face Brazil and Great Britain will take on Australia in the quarterfinals.
All matches will take place on Friday, July 30. Canada faces Brazil at 3:00 a.m. CT, followed by Great Britain vs Australia at 4:00 a.m. CT and the USWNT meets the Netherlands at 6:00 a.m. CT. All matches will be streamed on NBCOlympics.com, and the USWNT match will be broadcast on NBC Sports Network and Telemundo.
