The Houston Dynamo and Houston Dash are the first organization to financially support the effort to bring 2026 FIFA World Cup to Houston by becoming Bid Backers, the club and the Houston 2026 World Cup Bid Committee jointly announced today.
The Bid Committee is engaging the community to support its effort to bring the world’s most popular sporting event to Houston. The Bid Backers program will help fund the Houston 2026 Bid Committee efforts over the next two years as it works to bring the FIFA World Cup to Houston.
“The Dynamo and Dash are pleased to lead the way in supporting Houston’s World Cup bid,” said Dynamo and Dash majority ownerGabriel Brener. “The World Cup is the most prestigious event in the world and having it in Houston will have a significant impact on our city and our game. We look forward to working with the committee in making it a successful bid for 2026.”
The FIFA World Cup is coming to the United States, Canada, and Mexico in 2026. 48 countries will be represented. 80 matches will be played. 16 cities will host matches, including three in Canada, three in Mexico and 10 in the United States.
Under the leadership of the Harris County – Houston Sports Authority, the Houston 2026 World Cup Bid Committee was recently formed to lead Houston’s efforts to bring FIFA World Cup matches to the Bayou City.
“We are grateful to the Dynamo and Dash for stepping up and becoming the first organization to back our World Cup bid efforts,” said Houston 2026 World Cup Bid Committee chairman John Arnold. “Having the community’s support and funding in place will play a significant role in our bid’s success. We are happy that our hometown soccer teams have led the way as we begin to hit the fundraising trail.”
Houston is among 17 finalists vying for the 10 U.S. spots. Over the course – of approximately – the next two years, the Committee will be fighting to earn Houston a spot as a 2026 FIFA World Cup site. A final decision is expected in late-2020.
