Houston Dash goalkeeper Lydia Williams received the Women’s Footballer of the Year award from Professional Footballers Australia, the representative body of Australia’s professional soccer players, earlier today.

“Over the past few years we have had a really hectic schedule and a lot of ups and downs and to have the backing of the girls means so much,” said the Matildas keeper on the PFA website. “Besides the players, people don’t see what goes into being a footballer day in day out and to receive that recognition is incredible.”

Williams started 15 games for Houston last season and led Australia to the knockout round of the soccer tournament at the Rio Olympic Games. She finished with 18 saves at the tournament, the most out of any NWSL goalkeeper in Brazil. Williams is currently with Melbourne City FC and has led them to an unbeaten streak through its first four games of the season. This is the second time the goalkeeper wins the award and she is the second player to win more than one PFA Player of the Year

“The first time I won the award was when I was breaking into the team. This time around there has been a lot of history-making events and I have experienced so many highs with the girls and this is the most rewarding recognition I can imagine,” Williams said.
