HOUSTON (June 26, 2024) – The Houston Dash travel to CPKC Stadium for the first time on Friday, June 28 as they face the Kansas City Current to open a two-game road trip. The team will open the road trip without head coach Fran Alonso, who did not travel with the team due to an illness. Assistant coach Ricky Clarke will assume the head coach duties for tomorrow’s match.
The Dash and Kansas City played to a 1-1 draw at Shell Energy Stadium on May 5. Amanda West scored the equalizer for Houston, her first goal at the professional level. Dash goalkeeper Jane Campbell finished with 12 saves against the Current, a new record for the Dash shot stopper. Campbell’s 12 saves against Kansas City also tied the league record for most saves in a single match.
Friday’s match will stream live on Prime Video starting at 7 p.m. CT. Houston made its debut on Prime Video earlier this season against the Washington Spirit at home on April 12. The Dash celebrated the 10th anniversary of its first ever match following an expansion bid for the 2014 season.
Houston secured its sixth clean sheet of the season on Saturday in a 0-0 draw with San Diego Wave FC at Shell Energy Stadium. Campbell finished with three saves against San Diego and currently sits at 494 saves in league play. The Dash goalkeeper currently leads the league with 67 saves and is tied for the most shutouts in the regular season.
Houston’s defensive contributions were visible throughout the match on Saturday. Forward Barabra Olivieri led the team with nine recoveries and midfielder Andressa led the Dash with four interceptions. Avery Patterson won 11 of her 14 duels against San Diego and finished with three clearances.
Kansas City has won three out of their last four matches after earning three points on the road in Oregon last weekend. The Current defeated the Portland Thorns 4-1 at Providence Park to remain unbeaten in league play through 14 games this season. Kansas City is currently tied for the most points in league play with the Orlando Pride at 32.
Kansas City leads the league in goals scored with 37 and forward Temwa Chawinga has been key to their success, scoring nine goals and adding six assists this season. Bia Zaneratto and Lo’eau Labonta have also led the charge in the final third by combining for 10 goals. Vanessa Dibernardo has also played a crucial role for the Current, scoring four goals and adding five assists.
The Dash close the two-game road trip on Saturday, July 6 at SeatGeek Stadium against the Chicago Red Stars. The team returns to Shell Energy Stadium on July 28 to host Tigres UANL in the NWSL x LIGA MX Femenil Summer Cup.
