Tickets to the 2016 National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) Championship match are now on sale at NWSLChampionship.com. Lower-level seats start at just $20. The match, which will determine the fourth champion of the women’s professional league, will be held at BBVA Compass Stadium in downtown Houston on Sunday, Oct. 9. It will be broadcast live on Fox Sports 1. Kick-off time will be announced at a later date.
“We are very excited for the 2016 NWSL Championship and are looking forward to having an amazing atmosphere and crowd at BBVA Compass Stadium on Oct. 9,” NWSL Commissioner Jeff Plush said. “We encourage all of our fans, regardless of which team you support, to come out and help us build our championship into an annual destination for all fans of the beautiful game.”
Now in its 4th season, the NWSL is the longest running women’s professional soccer league in the United States. The league launched in 2013 with eight teams, adding an expansion team in 2014, Houston Dash, and 2016, Orlando Pride.
The top four teams play knockout semifinal matches, with the winners facing off in the championship. The Portland Thorns won the inaugural match in 2013, with FC Kansas City taking the title the last two years. This is the second year that the NWSL Championship will be played at a predetermined site after being held in Portland last year.
Teams from around the league feature the top names from the United States Women’s National Team, including Carli Lloyd and Morgan Brian (Houston), Alex Morgan and Ashlyn Harris (Orlando), Hope Solo (Seattle) and Becky Sauerbrunn (Kansas City).
“We are excited to bring this event to Houston,” said BBVA Compass Stadium President Chris Canetti. “We look forward to showcasing our stadium, our fan base, and our community to a nationally televised audience. We also look forward to giving local soccer fans the opportunity to be a part of a memorable, thrilling experience.”
