The U.S. Women’s National Team (USWNT) will face Russia in a friendly at 1 p.m. on Sunday, April 9 at BBVA Compass Stadium, U.S. Soccer announced today.
Tickets will go on sale Thursday, Feb. 23 and begin at $25. ESPN will broadcast the match and this will be the fourth USWNT game at BBVA Compass Stadium and seventh in Houston. The USWNT is undefeated in the Bayou City and return to Texas where they claimed the 2016 CONCACAF Olympic Qualifying Championship.
The USWNT features Houston Dash goalkeeper Jane Campbell, midfielder Morgan Brian and forward Kealia Ohai who made her debut with the senior team last October. Additionally, USWNT co-captain Carli Lloyd, who is scheduled to return to the Dash in June, could make her first appearance at BBVA Compass Stadium since the final game of the 2016 NWSL regular season. Lloyd was recently named the FIFA Women’s Player of the Year for a second consecutive year after she finished with 11 assists and 17 goals in 21 games. Lloyd and Brian won the 2016 CONCACAF Olympic Qualifying Championship in Houston last February where Brian won the Golden Ball as the best player in the tournament.
Russia has qualified for two Women’s World Cup and is currently ranked 23rd in the latest FIFA Women’s Rankings. Russia recently competed in the 2016 Algarve Cup and has qualified for the last three UEFA Women’s Championship. Russia is led by defender Ksenia Tsybutovich and features midfielder Ekaterina Sochneva and forward Olesya Kurochkina.
