The men's college soccer season provides a chance to keep up with the 12 protected players from the Dynamo Academy competing in the college ranks. Two players were signed to professional contracts last January after completing their college season, so some of these names could make an impact on the Dynamo's future.
Below is a report on Dynamo Academy players from the last two weeks, sorted by year of eligibility:
Seniors
Daniel Roberts, MF/FW, UNC-Wilmington (Fort Bend Clements) Dynamo bio | UNCW bio
Provided cross for one of Seahawks' two goals in 4-2 loss to Campbell on Sept. 1 but left after only 23 minutes of 2-0 loss to No. 23 UNC-Charlotte on Sept. 4 and did not play in last weekend's UNCW classic.
Clayton Holz, MF, Stanford (St. John's) Dynamo bio | Stanford bio
Has made two appearances as a substitute so far, including helping the Cardinal to a 3-1 win vs. No. 15 Kentucky on Sept. 9. Stanford is 1-4 on the young season.
Matt Kirby, MF, Denver (Beaumont Msgr. Kelly) Dynamo bio | DU bio
Has come on as an offensive-minded substitute in all four games and set up game-tying goal with right-wing cross in 20th-ranked Pioneers' come-from-behind 2-2 tie at No. 11 Notre Dame on Sept. 9.
Juniors
Matt Boullt, DF, Tulsa (Fort Bend Clements) Dynamo bio | Tulsa bio
Continues to start every game for Golden Hurricane and contributed first assist of the season on tying goal in 2-1 win vs. Oakland on Sept. 11.
Sophomores
Sebastien Ibeagha, DF/MF, Duke (Fort Bend Hightower) Dynamo bio | Duke bio
Continues to start at center back as a strong professional prospect and netted game-winning goal in 1-0 triumph over Furman on Aug. 29. Ibeagha also was ejected from the game, forcing him to miss the Blue Devils' overtime loss to UC Santa Barbara. Duke has dropped out of the top 25 and lost consecutive games to UCSB, SMU, and Virginia.
C.J. Odenigwe, DF, North Carolina (Fort Bend Travis) Dynamo bio | UNC bio
Odenigwe is likely to miss the entire season after suffering a preseason injury.
Johnny Torres, MF, Wake Forest (Humble Atascocita) Dynamo bio | Wake bio
Has appeared as a substitute in last three games after not playing in season opener. Helped Wake to 2-1 win over Clemson with 34 minutes and a shot in ACC opener on Sept. 9.
Pat Wall, GK, Notre Dame (Strake Jesuit) Dynamo bio | ND bio
Has not played while serving as one of the backups to starter Will Walsh; 14th-ranked Notre Dame is 2-1-2 on the year.
Freshmen
Leo Ayala, DF, Central Florida (Challenge Early College) Dynamo bio | UCF bio
Has immediately become a regular, starting all five games for the Knights, who are off to a 5-0 start and ranked eighth nationally by Soccer America. In addition to stout defensive efforts, Ayala whipped in a cross from the left corner to set up the opening goal in a 2-0 win over UMass on Sept. 2, Ayala's 18th birthday.
Alan Hernandez, DF, Rhode Island (Pearland) Dynamo bio | URI bio
Another freshman who has stepped right into the starting lineup, Hernandez has started all six games for URI, which is 2-4 so far on the season. The Rams' most recent result was a 2-1 win over Harvard on Sept. 11.
Ábe Matamoros, MF, Tulsa (Strake Jesuit) Dynamo bio | Tulsa bio
Stepped into starting role after coming off bench for first two games, but was taken out late in UConn match on Sept. 9 and did not appear against Oakland on Sept. 11.
Miguel Zapata, MF, Tulsa (Katy Mayde Creek) Dynamo bio | Tulsa bio
Started first two games of the season but was taken out early against Missouri State on Sept. 1 and did not return until coming on as a substitute against Oakland on Sept. 11.
Area College Teams
Houston Baptist University
HBU has struggled to an 0-5 start, including a frustrating 2-1 loss to Butler on Sunday. The Huskies are home this weekend at Sorrels Field, hosting Wofford Friday night and San Diego State on Sunday afternoon.
Other Connections
Goalkeepers coach Tim Hanley's son, Riley Hanley, played 41 minutes in St. Mary's 1-0 loss to the University of California - Riverside on Sunday afternoon. The freshman recorded tallied two shots on goal. Hanley has now appeared in four games and recorded three shots on goal for the Gaels this season.
