The Houston Dynamo Academy, presented by Statoil, warpped up the 2012 U.S. Soccer Development Academy Winter Showcase in Bradenton, Fla. The U-18s finished the weekend 2-0-1, while the U-16s finished 2-1-0.
In the annual Winter Showcase, the Dynamo were paired in a group with MLS Academy sides Portland Timbers and San Jose Earthquakes and Michigan-based club Vardar SC Freiburg. The U-18s kicked things off with back-to-back wins over the Timbers and Earthquakes. Bryan Salazar scored two goals and Gian Carlo Rojas and Dener Dos Santos scored a goal a piece as the Dynamo defeated Portland 4-1. Salazar followed up the two-goal performance with another on Saturday, tallying both goals in Houston's 2-1 win over the San Jose Earthquakes.
On Monday, the Dynamo U-18s concluded their trip with a 4-4 draw against Vardar. Despite being down 4-1 at halftime and playing with only ten men following a red card to center back Bobby Frame, the Dynamo responded with three second-half goals including one in stoppage time to earn the point. Salazar scored his fifth goal of the tournament, Jose Rodriguez added two goals and Garrett Welch added his first of the season for Houston.
The Dynamo U-16s kicked things off on Saturday with a 2-0 win over the Portland Timbers. Lucio Martinez and Elo Ozumba scored first-half goals and Andy Rios was in net for his fifth shutout of the season. Houston followed up their win over Portland with a dramatic 4-3 win over the San Jose Earthquakes. Down 3-2 late, the Dynamo took advantage of an Earthquakes own goal to tie the match. Moments later, Ozumba scored his second of the weekend to give Houston the full three points. Sergio Quintanilla and Giovanni Pachecho also tallied for the Dynamo.
Although the U-16s won their first two games to extend their winning streak to six games, that streak would be snapped in their showcase finale with a 3-0 loss to Vardar on Tuesday.
Both the U-16s and U-18s used strong showings in Florida to move up in their respective standings. The U-16s are currently in third place in their divison with a 7-2-1 record and a 2.20 points per game average. The U-18s are currently in fourth place with a 5-2-3 record and 1.80 points per game.
Back in Texas, the Dynamo Pre-Academy squads continued their strong form with a sweep of Andromeda.
The Dynamo U-15s won in dominating fashion, defeating Andromeda 5-0 to improve to 6-1-3 and take hold of first place in the Texas Pre-Academy League. Andrew Canales (pictured, above) scored a hat trick and Roberto Marquez and William Barron added a goal each.
The Dynamo U-14 won their third match in a row, defeating Andromeda 2-1 behind penalty-kick goals from Jommar Reyes and Alejandro Lezama.
The Dynamo U-13s improved their unbeaten streak to seven consecutive matches with a 1-0 win over Andromeda. Johan Benitez scored the game's lone goal.
All five Dynamo teams will be off this weekend. They will return to play on December 15 (Academy) and 16 (Pre-Academy) with matches against Solar Chelsea at the Houston Amateur Sports Park.
