It was a tremendous weekend for the Houston Dynamo Academy. In addition to former Academy goalkeeper Tyler Deric making his MLS debut in a 1-0 victory for the Dynamo first team, both Academy teams traveled to San Antonio on Saturday and came away with victories against Classics Elite.
The Dynamo U-18s (1-3-1) picked up their first win in divisional play, knocking off Classics Elite 2-1. Chance Bergen recorded two goals before being sent off in the 65th minute after picking up his second yellow card. The Dynamo were forced to play a man down early when Miguel Zapata received a red card for a hard tackle on a breakaway inside Houston's penalty box. Goalkeeper Graham Wheeler came up big for the Dynamo, diving to his right to save the shot and keep the match scoreless.
Houston broke through right before halftime when Leo Ayala (Challenge Early College) found Bergen in the box for a powerful header that beat goalkeeper Matt Cardone. Bergen added to his total in the 62nd minute when he forced the goalkeeper to dive right, then chipped the ball left into the empty net. Although Classics broke through for a goal by Alejandro De la Garza in the 78th minute, the Dynamo defense, playing down two men, held firm to come away with the squad's first win of the season.
In the second match of the day, the Dynamo U-16s (2-3) scored early and often en route to a 4-0 victory over Classics Elite. Houston opened the scoring in the 14th minute when Bradley Bourgeois (Cy-Fair) headed Branco Ramirez's corner kick past a diving Edsson Ismael Ortiz. Ramirez was the star of the game for Houston, tallying two goals on the day, in addition to his early assist. Ramirez scored off a through ball from Lorenzo Salazar (Houston Austin) in the 35th minute and penalty kick in the 65th minute after Christian Manisck (Awty International School) was fouled inside the box. Jorge Andrade (Cy Ridge) was the other Dynamo player to get his name on the scoresheet. In the 40th minute, Bryan Salazar (Fort Bend Bush) found Andrade streaking toward the near post, and Andrade volleyed the ball past Ortiz to increase Houston's lead.
Both Dynamo Academy teams return to action on Saturday for matches against Texas Rush at Bear Branch Field in The Woodlands. The U-18s kick off at 1 p.m., with the U-16s to follow at 3:30 p.m.
