Calen Carr joined his new Houston Dynamo teammates for his first training session Monday at the Carl Lewis Track & Field Complex.
Carr watched the session alongside trainer Theron Enns while still nursing a concussion that sidelined him for part of the preseason. Not being able to participate has not dampened the newest Dynamo forward's desire to get back to action and contribute to his new club.
“I’m improving, and I’ve made some good strides, and that’s the most important thing,” Carr said. “Head injuries are a little bit tricky, so they’re hesitant to give me a timetable, but the second I can get out there and work with the guys, I will.”
Carr is clearly excited about the opportunity to play for the Dynamo and head coach Dominic Kinnear. After playing against and watching Houston his first five years in the league, Carr said he is pleased to come to an organization with a championship pedigree.
“They won [the MLS Cup] my first two years in the league, and they’ve set the bar for what a championship team is in this league,” Carr said.
The Dynamo are still looking to regain their championship form, and like most clubs they are still seeking answers two weeks into the season. Club officials have been clear about their intent to improve the club, especially on the attacking side of things. The trade for Carr is expected to be another move in that direction.
“I think I’ll fit in well here,” Carr said. “It’s a hard-working group, and that’s a good place for me to start. They’ve got a great group of players here, and everything I’ve seen with the organization is first-class. I’m just excited to be a part of that.”
Once on the field, Carr said he is looking forward to providing an added dimension to the Dynamo attack. The fleet-footed attacker is known for being able to find space behind defenses. His ability to beat defenders to that space will serve as a change of pace from Houston’s current group of forwards. Whether as a reserve or starter, Carr is looking to contribute in any role the team needs.
“I’m looking to come in and bring some mobility, and I always look to find space on the field,” said Carr. “I’m looking to work hard and contribute however I can to help the team.”
