The Houston Dynamo were eliminated from the 2010 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup Tuesday night after a 3-1 loss to Chivas USA at Robertson Stadium. The Dynamo are back in action with their second of five consecutive home games on Saturday, hosting the Columbus Crew at Robertson Stadium.
It was Chivas’ first ever win at Robertson Stadium (1-7-2) and broke an 11-game Dynamo unbeaten streak against Chivas USA, dating back to the 2006 MLS Cup playoffs.
Justin Braun scored twice for Chivas USA, heading in the opening goal after just five minutes and netting the clincher with a cool finish in the 90th minute.
Houston’s best chance of the first half fell to Dominic Oduro in the 28th minute, when an Adrian Serioux header put him in alone with Chivas USA goalkeeper Zach Thornton, but Thornton made a kick save on Oduro’s low shot to preserve the 1-0 Chivas USA lead.
Houston came out strong early in the second half, but Chivas USA scored on the counterattack in the 65th minute to all but put the game away, as Michael Lahoud snuck behind the right side of the Dynamo defense and broke in alone on Tally Hall, firing a low shot past the Dynamo goalkeeper.
The Dynamo pulled one goal back in the 86th minute when Joseph Ngwenya’s shot from the top of the penalty area deflected off of Dominic Oduro and in, but Justin Braun’s second goal four minutes later put the game out of reach. The goal was Oduro's third of the season and his third against Chivas USA in less than two years with the Dynamo.
Goalkeeper Tally Hall made his 10th career start for the Dynamo in all competitions and made four saves in defeat.
