Home-grown goalkeeper Tyler Deric made three saves in his first career start and defender Andrew Hainault scored on a first-half header as the Houston Dynamo posted their first shutout in 12 MLS games with a 1-0 road win over the San Jose Earthquakes late Saturday night in northern California.

The win sends the Dynamo to 2-0-1 in their last three road games, and the shutout is the first in league play since Houston tied Columbus 0-0 on July 10, breaking a streak of 12 games without recordingn a shutout. The Dynamo outshot San Jose 19-10.

Dynamo goalkeeper Tyler Deric, 22, made his competitive professional debut and became the first Dynamo Academy product to start an MLS match. He made three saves – including two in the second half – to record the shutout. Deric also became the first home-grown goalkeeper in league history to post a shutout in his first match. He is the second home-grown goalkeeper in MLS history to start a match, joining D.C. United’s Bill Hamid. He is the youngest goalkeeper in club history to appear in a match.

The Dynamo took the lead in the 23rd minute, when Andrew Hainault dove to head a Brad Davis corner kick into the top of the net. It was the second goal in three games for Hainault, a defender, and the 10th assist of the season for Davis, now tied for third in Major League Soccer in assists. It is the second consecutive year Davis has notched double-digit assists; he had 12 in MLS play and 13 overall in 2009.

In the second half, the Dynamo failed to take advantage of numerous chances to add to their lead, as San Jose goalkeeper Jon Busch made six total saves for the match, including three stops on Dominic Oduro in the second half. At the other end of the field, Tyler Deric held two low shots from another Houston-area product, Katy Mayde Creek’s Arturo Alvarez, in the final 15 minutes to preserve the win and the shutout.

For Houston, forward Dominic Oduro made his 115th career MLS appearance, midfielder Corey Ashe made the 45th start of his MLS career, and midfielder Danny Cruz made his 40th career appearance in all competitions.

The Dynamo played without forward Joseph Ngwenya (red card), midfielders Sammy Appiah (back spasms), Geoff Cameron (red card) and Colin Clark (ACL surgery), and goalkeeper Tally Hall (ankle). Brian Ching (knee) and Anthony Obodai (meniscus surgery) were unused substitutes.
