The Houston Dynamo Academy U-16s finished the group stage of the 2017 Generation adidas Cup tied for the group lead, but missed advancing to the semifinals of the competition due to a head-to-head tiebreaker with Tigres UANL.
The Dynamo began the tournament with a 3-0 win over fellow MLS side D.C. United last Friday. The team got a goal back from Tigres after falling behind 2-0 on Sunday, but couldn't come all the way back in the second game. The boys finished the group with a 2-1 win over the Portland Timbers on Tuesday morning.
The U-16s were without U.S. youth international Marcelo Palomino, who will be out for an extended period with a broken foot. The Dynamo were bolstered by the addition of Wilmer Cabrera, Jr., son of first team head coach Wilmer Cabrera, for the tournament. The younger Cabrera scored a goal apiece against D.C. and Portland.
The Dynamo finished tied with Tigres atop Group D with both teams recording a 2-1-0 record (6 points) and had a greater goal difference (+6 vs. +5), but lost out on a semifinal berth due to Tigres' head-to-head win. They will play Monterrey on Thursday, and with a win would face the winner of Seattle Sounders vs. Chivas de Guadalajara for 5th place in the tournament.
The Dynamo Academy will also play in the U-12 portion of the tournament with doubleheaders on Thursday and Friday. Below is the full group schedule.
