The Houston Dynamo Academy, presented by Statoil, will host the first Dynamo Academy Cup on Aug. 24-26 at Houston Amateur Sports Park, the team announced today. The tournament will pit some of the top youth teams from around the world against each other over the course of the three days.
Expected to attend the tournament are premier youth teams from across the United States and Mexico, including MLS and Primera División academies. The tournament will feature teams at the U-13, U-14, U-15, U-16 and U-18 levels.
“It’s a great opportunity for elite players from around the country to get game experience against other similarly-talented players,” said Dynamo assistant director of youth development Eddie Robinson. “It will be a lot of fun for these teams to come out and compete in a different format than they may be accustomed to.”
The tournament set-up will be similar to that of the famous Eurovoetbal tournament in the Netherlands, which the Dynamo Academy competed in during the summer of 2011. Teams will play five games with two twenty-minute halves, which should provide plenty of exciting, attacking soccer, said Robinson.
The event will be held at the state-of-the-art Houston Amateur Sports Park, training home to the Houston Dynamo first team and youth academy. This modern training facility, opened in 2011, regularly hosts MLS Reserve League matches and youth tournaments on its six grass soccer fields.
In addition to the tournament, players will have the opportunity to watch the Houston Dynamo take on Toronto FC on August 25 at BBVA Compass Stadium (7:30 p.m. CT).
