Houston Dynamo defender Dylan Remick announced his retirement from Major League Soccer this evening.
Remick, 27, played in 58 games with 45 starts over his six-year career, including 14 appearances and 13 starts for Houston in 2017 before missing the 2018 season due to injury. The defender joined the Dynamo after the club selected him in the first round of the 2016 MLS Re-Entry Draft on December 16, 2016.
In his first season wearing Orange, Remick played an integral role in helping the club return to the postseason and advance to the Western Conference Championship. In just his second start for the club, he netted his first goal in league play, scoring off a header from a corner kick against the New York Red Bulls. Remick’s goal leveled the match at 1-1 and came just seconds after the Red Bulls had taken the lead, giving Houston back the momentum and spurring the club to a resounding 4-1 victory.
“We’d like to thank Dylan for the last two years with the Houston Dynamo,” said Dynamo Senior Vice President and General Manager Matt Jordan. “We appreciate the professional attitude and commitment that he brought to the team on and off the field every day. We wish him well as he approaches his next challenge.”
Remick scored in all three competitions for the Dynamo in 2017 – league play, the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup and the Audi MLS Cup Playoffs. It was his goal at Portland in the playoffs that secured Houston’s series win over the Timbers and sent his team through to the Western Conference Championship. This time he scored off a stunning side volley from his weaker right foot into the upper corner of the net. The goal once again leveled a match at 1-1 and set the stage for an eventual Dynamo victory, but it gave Houston a vital away goal which clinched their advancement.
Prior to joining the Dynamo, Remick played four years for Seattle Sounders FC, seeing action in 44 games with 32 starts. While with the Sounders, Remick was part of Seattle’s 2016 MLS Cup-winning side and the 2014 Sounders squad that won the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup. Along with Houston’s 2018 Open Cup title, Remick won three trophies in his six-year MLS career.
Off the field, the Inverness, Illinois native was extremely active in the community throughout his career. While with the Dynamo, he began working with Coming Up Rosies, a Chicago-based non-profit whose mission is to restore confidence, happiness and pride to anyone struggling with low self-esteem during their medical journey, especially bald children. With Remick’s assistance, the Dynamo partnered with Coming Up Rosies to create customized “superhero” capes as part of the club’s annual Kick Childhood Cancer match this fall.
