Houston Dynamo forward Erick Torres has been added to the Mexican National Team roster for this month’s CONCACAF Gold Cup, the Mexican Football Federation (FMF) announced today. Torres was added to the Mexican National Team following forward Alan Pulido’s injury on Saturday in a friendly match against Paraguay.
Torres will join El Tri following Houston’s game against the Montreal Impact on Wednesday night at BBVA Compass Stadium at 7:30p.m. CDT (TICKETS).
Mexico will open their participation in the Gold Cup against El Salvador on Sunday, July 9 at Qualcomm Stadium in San Diego, California. They will then face Jamaica on Thursday, July 13 at Sports Authority Field at Mile High in Denver, Colorado, and will close their group stage participation against Curaçao on Sunday, July 16, at the Alamodome in San Antonio. El Tri is looking to win the Gold Cup for eighth time and capture their second consecutive Gold Cup title.
Torres is the fourth Dynamo player to be called in by their respective national teams for the CONCACAF Gold Cup, joining the Honduran trio of midfielder Boniek GarcÃa and forwards Alberth Elis and Romell Quioto.
GarcÃa, Elis, Quioto and Los Catrachos will play at BBVA Compass Stadium on Tuesday, July 11 as part of a Gold Cup double header. Tickets for that event start at $33 online at BBVACompassStadium.com, by phone at 713-547-3000, or in person at the BBVA Compass Stadium Box Office. Tickets include both games of the doubleheader, starting with the Costa Rica vs. Canada match at 6:30 p.m. CDT with Honduras and French Guiana to follow at 9 p.m.
Torres has represented Mexico in multiple international tournaments at the youth level, yet the Gold Cup will be the 24-year-old’s first tournament at the senior international level. Torres has played at the senior level in four friendly matches and scored one goal, which came on October 12, 2014 when he scored the game-winning goal in a friendly match against Panama.
Currently, Torres is second on the Major League Soccer goal scoring chart with 12 goals and two assists. With nearly half of the MLS season to go, he is already one goal away from matching the Dynamo single season scoring record and three away from tying his career high. His performances have earned him a nomination to the 2017 MLS All-Star Game presented by Target, which will be played on Wednesday, August 2 at Chicago’s Soldier Field at 8:00 p.m. CDT vs. Real Madrid.
