Houston Dynamo forward Erick Torres have been called up by Mexico’s Under-23 national team for the 2016 Toulon Tournament in France. Torres will join the 23-player squad in France on Sunday, following the Dynamo’s home game against Real Salt Lake on Saturday (7:15 p.m. CT; TICKETS).
Torres is the only player in Major League Soccer to be called into the team by Mexico.
The Toulon Tournament is set for its 44th edition and serves as preparation for the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Mexico will face France (May 18), Czech Republic (May 20), Mali (May 22), and Bulgaria (May 24) in the group stage. The top finisher in each five-team group advances to the final, set for May 29.
Last October, Torres was named to the Best XI team at the 2015 CONCACAF Men’s Olympic Qualifying Championship by the Technical Study Group after scoring three goals. Mexico won its second consecutive U-23 championship to qualify for 2016 Rio Olympics. Mexico will defend the Olympic gold medal it won at the London 2012 Games this August in Brazil. Torres last played for El Tri’s U-23s in a friendly against Japan in Portugal on March 25.
Torres and the Dynamo face the San Jose Earthquakes on Wednesday at 9:30 p.m. CT at Avaya Stadium in San Jose. The match will air on ROOT SPORTS Southwest, with pregame set for 9:00 p.m. CT.
