The Houston Dynamo will host a third round match in the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup on Tuesday, June 29, at 7:30 p.m. at Robertson Stadium, it was announced today. The Dynamo will face Miami FC, which beat the Tampa Bay Rowdies 2-1 in extra time Tuesday in the second round at Lockhart Stadium in Fort Lauderdale, Fla.
Tickets for next Tuesday’s match are available at HoustonDynamo.com or by calling (713) 276-7500. Dynamo season ticket holders can purchase tickets for a reduced price of $8, and all other tickets will cost $12. There will be no charge for parking at Tuesday’s game, and fans will enter on the Scott St. side of Robertson Stadium.
It is the Dynamo’s first home match in Open Cup play since 2006, when they reached the semifinals. Houston also reached the semifinals last year before losing to eventual champion Seattle in overtime.
The Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup is an annual single-elimination competition open to all amateur and professional soccer teams affiliated with U.S. Soccer. The tournament has crowned a champion for 95 consecutive years dating back to 1914. It is the oldest annual team tournament in U.S. sports history and among the oldest soccer tournaments of its type in the world.
Miami's roster has a heavily Brazilian influence, and 21-year-old forward Paulo Araujo scored four goals in the final 10 minutes of its first-round win. Other notable players include Houston product Chris Gbandi, former Dynamo forward Abe Thompson, former D.C. United star Christian Gomez, and several other former MLS players.
The winner of Tuesday’s game will advance to the U.S. Open Cup quarterfinals July 6-7 against an opponent and at a venue to be announced by U.S. Soccer this week.
The Dynamo return to Major League Soccer action this Saturday night after a three-week break, hosting the Colorado Rapids at Robertson Stadium at 7:30 p.m.
