Houston Dynamo FC selected midfielder Chris Durkin in the 2022 MLS Allocation Process and then traded Durkin to D.C. United for $325,000 in General Allocation Money (GAM) and D.C. United’s Allocation Ranking.
The Dynamo held the second selection in the Allocation Ranking Order and D.C. United held the number 10 spot after the selection of Durkin. Houston will receive $200,000 GAM in 2022 and $125,000 GAM in 2023.
The Allocation Process determines which MLS Club has first priority to acquire a player listed on the Allocation Ranking List. The list consists of select U.S. National Team players, elite youth U.S. internationals and former MLS players returning to the league after joining a non-MLS club for a transfer fee greater than $500,000. Durkin falls into the third category after he left D.C. United during the 2019 season.
The Allocation Ranking Order is set by taking the reverse order of the club’s standings at the end of each MLS Season, taking playoff performance into account, with the new expansion clubs at the top of the order. The rankings reset at the end of each MLS season.
Durkin returns to MLS from after playing with Sint-Truiden in the Belgian Pro League from 2020-22.
