The Houston Dynamo announced today they have acquired defender and Texas native Hunter Freeman. The Dynamo acquired Freeman’s rights in a trade with the New York Red Bulls, and he has signed a multi-year contract. Per team and league policy, terms of the deal were not disclosed. Freeman will be formally introduced at a 2:30 p.m. press conference today at the Dynamo offices.

In the trade, the Dynamo sent allocation money to New York in exchange for the rights to Freeman, who left MLS after the 2008 season to play for IK Start in Norway, and New York’s natural third-round pick in the 2012 MLS SuperDraft.
“I’m very happy to acquire Hunter,” Dynamo head coach Dominic Kinnear said. “I’ve always liked the way he plays. He can play on the left or right, he likes to attack, and I enjoyed his company when I worked with him on a Generation adidas trip. So I’m happy to see him come back to MLS and playing for us.”
Freeman, who will turn 26 in January, was born in Tyler, Texas, and grew up in Allen, northeast of Dallas. He spent two years in the U.S. U-17 residency program in Bradenton, Fla., and three years at the University of Virginia. Freeman signed a Generation adidas contract with Major League Soccer and was taken with the No. 7 overall pick of the 2005 MLS SuperDraft. The Dynamo are his fourth MLS club, following the Colorado Rapids, New York Red Bulls, and Toronto FC.
