Rio Grande Valley FC took a 3-0 victory over Seattle Sounders FC 2 on Saturday night at H-E-B Park.
The hosts took the lead just five minutes into the match when Todd Wharton took Carlos Small’s pass and fired a right-footed shot from outside the box into the bottom left corner. Goalkeeper Chris Seitz made that lead stand up for RGVFC five minutes later when he came out quickly to smother a shot from Nicholas Hinds.
The hosts doubled their advantage five minutes before halftime when Eric Bird brilliantly flicked the ball over his head and set himself up to volley home with his left foot past S2 keeper Calle Brown. Seitz came up with another big stop ten minutes after halftime as came out early again to make himself big and deny Azriel Gonzalez after the midfielder had burst through RGVFC’s defense.
The home side sealed the three points 12 minutes from time as Nicolas Perea rose highest to head home Todd Wharton’s corner kick as RGVFC extended its unbeaten run to three games. Defenders A.J. DeLaGarza and Conor Donovan also played the full 90 minutes for RGV on loan from the first team, in addition to Seitz and Bird.
