Former Houston Dynamo defender and 13-year MLS veteran Bobby Boswell announced his retirement from professional soccer Monday morning via social media.
Boswell, 34, played 366 regular season games and scored 19 goals with 13 assists for the Dynamo, D.C. United, and Atlanta United FC.
The Tampa, Florida native began his professional career as an undrafted signee by D.C. in 2005, and was thrust into a starting role in his rookie season due to injuries. The following season, Boswell earned a spot in the MLS Best XI and was named Defender of the Year after helping D.C. win the Supporters' Shield.
Boswell was traded the Dynamo following the 2007 season, and became a lynchpin in Houston's back line. He was voted the team's Defender of the Year three times (2008, 2010, 2012) and was a starting center back for the Dynamo's Conference Championship teams in 2011 and 2012, serving as captain on several occasions. Never one to miss a game, Boswell ranks high on the Dynamo's all-time record chart with 234 games played (4th), 228 games started (3rd), and 20,637 minutes played (2nd) in all competitions for Houston. His 39 yellow cards trail only Eddie Robinson (42) in team history.
Boswell returned to D.C. United in 2014 and appeared in his 300th MLS regular season match with his original club. He was traded to Atlanta United in August 2017, where he made one appearance.
