Former Houston Dynamo midfielder Adam Moffat announced his retirement from professional soccer today, ending a 15-year career across MLS, USL and NASL. The 32-year-old had spent the past two seasons with Sacramento Republic FC of the USL.
“Truly blessed,” said Moffat. “Fifteen years is a long time doing what you love and I know full well that not many people get the opportunities I’ve been afforded. I feel that I accomplished everything I wanted and more, so I’m truly grateful for the love, support and encouragement I have received from my wife, parents and so many others throughout my career.”
Moffat made 62 regular season appearances for the Dynamo from 2011-13, scoring seven goals with five assists. The holding midfielder also made 10 playoff appearances as the Dynamo made back-to-back MLS Cup appearances in 2011 and 2012, scoring one goal against Sporting Kansas City in the 2012 Eastern Conference Semifinals.
The Scotsman earned acclaim in the Dynamo midfield for his tenacious work ethic and long-range scoring ability.
A native of Glasgow, Moffat began his career in Scotland with lower division teams Ross County and Elgin City. He moved to the U.S. in 2007, playing for Cleveland City Stars in the USL Second Division before earning a contract with the Columbus Crew during their Supporters' Shield and MLS Cup-winning 2008 campaign. Moffat was selected by the Portland Timbers in the 2011 expansion draft before his trade to Houston the same year. He was traded to Seattle Sounders FC during the 2013 season, then to FC Dallas prior to 2014. In total, Moffat made 149 MLS appearances in the regular season and playoffs.
In 2015, Moffat signed with the New York Cosmos in the North American Soccer League and played there for two seasons, winning two championships. He then moved to Sacramento where he played his final two professional seasons.
