Houston Dynamo FC captain Héctor Herrera was named to the MLSSoccer.com Team of Matchday for Matchday 29, the league announced today. The Dynamo defeated the Columbus Crew 2-0 at Shell Energy Stadium on Wednesday.
The result was Houston’s fourth consecutive victory in all competitions for the first time since June 21, finishing the night in fourth place in the Western Conference. The team also earned its 11th clean sheet of the season.
Herrera assisted on the Dynamo’s second goal of the match in the 90th minute after spinning around a defender near Houston’s own penalty box and finding forward Aliyu Ibrahim breaking down the field near the halfway line. The 21-year-old composed himself as he entered the opposing box and fired the ball over Columbus goalkeeper Patrick Schulte for his second goal of the season.
Herrera, who received his latest international callup to represent Mexico in international friendlies versus Australia and Uzbekistan in the September FIFA window, is tied for the most assists in MLS this season with 13. During the match, Herrera created two chances, while winning possession a team-leading 10 times.
Ten Houston players have been named to the Team of the Matchday this season, including Herrera (Matchday 4, 15, 18, 20, 24 and 29), Ibrahim (Matchday 28), defender Franco Escobar (Matchday 7, 18 and 27), forward Corey Baird (Matchday 27), midfielder Adalberto “Coco” Carrasquilla (Matchday 27), forward Thor Úlfarsson (Matchday 20), goalkeeper Steve Clark (Matchday 11), defender Daniel Steres (Matchday 9), forward Amine Bassi (Matchday 7) and midfielder Artur (Matchday 5).
