Houston Dynamo FC midfielder Héctor Herrera was named to the roster for the 2022 Major League Soccer All-Star Skills Challenge presented by AT&T 5G, Major League Soccer announced today. The Mexico captain will be joined by Toronto FC forward and fellow secondary-transfer window arrival Lorenzo Insigne along with eight MLS All-Stars in the competition on August 9 at Allianz Field in Saint Paul, Minnesota.
Herrera made his debut for the Dynamo in front of a sold-out crowd of 21,284 at PNC Stadium on July 9 against in-state rival FC Dallas, coming on as a substitute in the 55th minute. With Herrera on the pitch, Houston came back to tie the match twice after suffering one-goal deficits, including the latest non-penalty goal in MLS history when the Dynamo equalized in the 11th minute of stoppage time.
The midfielder made his first start for the Dynamo in the last weekend’s matchup on the road against the San Jose Earthquakes. Herrera played the entire game and helped lead the team to a dramatic comeback victory on the road as the Dynamo scored in the 71st and 76th minutes to overcome a 1-0 deficit for the win.
An exciting core of eight recently named MLS All-Stars will also compete in the MLS All-Star Skills Challenge, including reigning Landon Donovan Most Valuable Player Carles Gil (New England Revolution) alongside 2021 MLS Cup MVP Sean Johnson (New York City FC), U.S. Men’s National Team striker Jesús Ferreira (FC Dallas), forward Javier “Chicharito” Hernández (LA Galaxy), attacking midfielders Sebastián Driussi (Austin FC) and Hany Mukhtar (Nashville SC), as well as hometown midfielder Emanuel Reynoso (Minnesota United FC) and goalkeeper Dayne St. Clair (Minnesota United FC) – also a member of the Canada Men’s National Team.
With anticipation building for the best in MLS to take on the best from LIGA MX, the MLS All-Star Skills Challenge presented by AT&T 5G will put the following five skills on full display: Shooting Challenge presented by AT&T 5G; Touch Challenge presented by Old Spice; Cross & Volley Challenge presented by AT&T 5G; Passing Challenge presented by Bounty; and Crossbar Challenge presented by GilletteLabs. Additional information – including rules and scoring for each competition – will be announced in the coming weeks.
