The Houston Dynamo Academy U-12 team will travel to Villagarcia de Arousa, Spain this May to represent the MLS in the annual Via Garcia AF7 Tournament.
The Dynamo earned their spot by placing third, and being the highest placing MLS team, in the 2016 Generation adidas Cup this past March. They defeated development academy teams from FC Dallas, New York Red Bulls, Celta de Vigo (Spain) and a nail-biter against the Chicago Fire that ultimately earned them the honor.
Dynamo player Alex Borsos was a standout for the U-12s in the tournament, moving back and forth between defense and the attacking line to help his team where needed. He scored a vital penalty kick against the Chicago Fire to move the team into the semi-finals.
“It was a great feeling knowing that I contributed in such a way to win a vital game,” said Borsos. “It was a fantastic feeling for the whole team.”
Borsos joined the Dynamo Academy in August of 2014, and this year is leading the team in assists (25), and is fourth on the team in scoring (18).
“I will never forget when we beat Celta de Vigo, 2-1. The victory showed how far we have come on and off the field,” said Borsos
The win against a Spanish team gives the team hope that they are prepared for the tough competition ahead. Via Garcia AF7 is the most high profile youth tournament in Spain, and will be broadcast live across Spanish television. Development teams from FC Barcelona, Real Madrid and Valencia CF are some of the clubs that will be competing alongside the Dynamo youngsters when they head across the pond May 1st.
