Houston Dynamo FC agreed to loan midfielder Joe Corona to GIF Sundsvall in the Allvsenskan, Sweden’s top professional division, for the remainder of the year, the clubs announced today.
The Dynamo utilized its one offseason buyout to waive the midfielder on Feb. 10. Corona was not selected in the waiver process and his guaranteed contract remained with Houston, per the league roster rules.
The central midfielder has earned 23 caps for the U.S. Men’s National Team and won two CONCACAF Gold Cups in 2013 and 2017. He also appeared in over 250 games in Mexico’s first division for Club Tijuana, Veracruz, Dorados, and Club America and was part of two league-winning sides with Club Tijuana in 2012-13 Apertura and Club America in the 2018-19 Apertura.
Corona signed for the Dynamo on Dec. 31, 2020 following his selection by Austin FC in Stage 2 of the MLS Re-Entry Process. Corona ultimately chose to sign with Houston and appeared in 30 games for the club in 2021. The 31-year-old tallied two assists in 2021 and played 1,731 minutes for the team.
