Houston Dynamo FC signed defender Djevencio van der Kust on loan from FC Utrecht, both clubs announced today. The transfer is pending receipt of van der Kust’s International Transfer Certificate and P-1 visa.
“We are excited to welcome Djevencio to Houston and look forward to his continued development after earning competitive minutes in one of the top leagues in the world,” Dynamo general manager, Pat Onstad said. “He is a promising young player that we believe can make an impact this season. He was very clear about why he wanted to join the club and we’re excited to welcome him.”
The 21-year-old is the youngest player to join the team in the recent transfer window and the ninth new player added to the roster. He finished with 24 appearances for FC Utrecht in all competitions and made his first team debut in the Eredivisie as a 20-year-old in a 4-0 victory over Sparta Rotterdam.
The bulk of his first team appearances came last year with 16 straight appearances as a starter for Utrecht. That stretch included starts against PSV Eindhoven, AZ Alkmaar, Feyenoord and the reigning league champion, AFC Ajax.
van der Kust is a product of the Utrecht youth academy and played at the U-17 and U-19 levels prior to earning a professional contract. He earned 48 appearances for Utrecht II prior to solidifying a spot on the first team roster. He also played for AVV Zeeburgia Youth as a teenager.
