HOUSTON (Wednesday, Jan. 31, 2024) – Houston Dynamo FC signed Slovakian midfielder Ján Greguš through 2024 with a club option for 2025, the club announced today.
“Ján brings extensive experience on MLS playoff teams, multiple European leagues, and over 30 caps for the Slovakian National Team. He adds valuable depth to our central midfield as we embark on the busiest season in club history, starting with our return to the Concacaf Champions Cup on Feb. 20,” said Dynamo General Manager Pat Onstad. “We welcome Ján to Houston and look forward to him being a valuable contributor on and off the field this season.”
Greguš began his MLS career with Minnesota United FC in 2019 as a Designated Player, while also spending time with the San Jose Earthquakes and Nashville SC. The 32-year-old has earned 102 MLS appearances (84 starts), scoring three goals and tallying 24 assists over that time. He led Minnesota to their best finish in the conference standings (fourth place) in 2019 and 2020 plus a spot in the semifinals of the MLS is Back Tournament in 2020.
Greguš led the Loons to their first appearance in the Audi MLS Cup playoffs in 2019 and would go on to earn four postseason appearances for Minnesota. He scored the first ever postseason goal for the Loons in their first-round match against the LA Galaxy in 2019. The midfielder tallied an assist the following year in the 3-0 victory over the Colorado Rapids in the first round of the Audi 2020 MLS Cup Playoffs, the first ever postseason triumph for the Loons. Minnesota ultimately reached the Western Conference Final with Greguš playing every minute of the postseason for the club.
On the international stage, the Slovakian has earned 36 appearances with his country’s national team and competed in the 2016 and 2020 editions of the UEFA EURO tournaments.
Before coming to MLS, Greguš played with various clubs in Europe, including FC Nitra (Slovakia), FC Banik Ostrava (Czech Republic), FK Jablonec (Czech Republic) and Copenhagen (Denmark). Most notably, the midfielder won the 2016/17 league title and Danish Cup with Copenhagen.
