The 59th edition of the Concacaf Champions Cup, the region's premier men's club competition, will be played between February and June 2024. The annual tournament, comprised of five direct elimination rounds and the 27 best clubs from North America, Central America and the Caribbean, crowns the Confederation's club champion and is the sole qualification route for the region's clubs to the new and expanded FIFA Club World Cup.
This will mark the eighth time Houston has competed in the regional tournament, and the first time since 2019 when the Dynamo defeated Guatemalan side CD Guastatoya in the Round of 16 before falling to Mexican powerhouse Tigres UANL in the Quarterfinals. Houston’s best finishes in the competition came in 2007 and 2008 when the Dynamo advanced to the Semifinals.
Houston and St. Louis faced off twice in CITY’s inaugural season this year. After St. Louis won the first matchup on the road in June, the two clubs played to a 1-1 draw at Shell Energy Stadium in September.
During a resurgent 2023 led by first-year head coach Ben Olsen, Houston qualified for this year’s competition after winning the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup over Inter Miami CF for the club’s fourth domestic championship. In MLS play, the Dynamo finished fourth in the table and reached the Western Conference Final in their first postseason run since 2017, while also advancing to the Round of 16 in the inaugural Leagues Cup between MLS and Liga MX.
During the club’s inaugural season, St. Louis qualified for its first Champions Cups appearance by finishing atop the MLS Western Conference regular season standings.
The winner of this Round One matchup will face fellow MLS side Columbus Crew, who received a bye to the Round of 16 after winning the 2023 MLS Cup.
