The Houston Dynamo have signed Swedish defender Adam Lundqvist, the club announced today. He will join the Dynamo pending receipt of his International Transfer Certificate (ITC) and P-1 Visa.
Lundqvist was acquired by the Dynamo using Targeted Allocation Money (TAM) and will occupy an International roster spot. He becomes the second player to join the Dynamo this week. Earlier this week, midfielder Luis Gil joined the Dynamo on loan from Liga MX’s club Queretaro FC.
“Adam is a young and talented defender who has already played over 100 first division matches at just 24 years old and has represented his country at important international competitions,” said Dynamo Senior Vice President and General Manager Matt Jordan. “We are confident that he has the quality as a player and the mentality as a professional to grow and develop with our club.”
After developing in the IF Elfsborg Academy and playing for the club’s Under-19 side, Lundqvist joined the first team in 2011 at just 18 years of age. During his tenure, he played in 109 games in the Swedish Allsvenskan (first division) scoring three goals and recording 15 assists. In the 2013-14 season, the Swedish international helped Di Gule win the Svenska Cup and reach the group stage of the UEFA Europa League.

Even though he is young, he has already represented Sweden in the Olympics, and he was a starter for IF Elfsborg,” said Dynamo Head Coach Wilmer Cabrera. “He is excited to come and accept the new challenge of playing for the Houston Dynamo and competing in MLS. Plus, he is excited to learn from DaMarcus Beasley, who has played in four World Cups and has a lot of experience, so that will make for a good opportunity for him.”
The 24-year-old has represented the Swedish national team at several age levels, playing for the Under-17, Under-18, Under-19, Under-21, and Under-23 national teams before earning his first cap with the Swedish National Team against Estonia in a 1-1 draw on January 6, 2016. Shortly after his international debut, Lundqvist recorded his first international assist in a 3-0 win against Finland on January 10. Later that year, Lundqvist was called to represent Sweden in the 2016 Rio Olympics and started in all three group stage games. Most recently, the Nyköping, Sweden native represented his country in the 2017 UEFA European U-21 Championships where he started in two of the group stage matches.
With the addition of Lundqvist, the Dynamo now have 29 players under contract for the 2018 season and eight players who occupy International roster spots.
