The U.S. men's national team earned a point at Estadio Azteca in Mexico City for just the third time in World Cup qualifying history on Sunday night. Houston Dynamo defender DaMarcus Beasley played the full 90 minutes, becoming the first American male player to appear in five World Cup qualifying cycles (2002, 2006, 2010, 2014, 2018).
Michael Bradley gave the visitors a shock lead just six minutes in when he chipped El Tri goalkeeper Guillermo Ochoa from some 40 yards out after a Mexico turnover in midfield.
But Carlos Vela struck back for the home side not long after, then cutting inside from the right flank and beating Brad Guzan with a daisy-cutter with his preferred left foot. Beasley took several knocks throughout the first half and limped off under his own power just before halftime, but was able to continue the rest of the way.
The rest of the game unfolded in familiar fashion, Mexico dominating possession and the USMNT defending bravely, and neither side could break the deadlock. The U.S. is now tied on points with Panama for second place in the Hex (2-2-2, 8 points), while Mexico remains in first (4-0-2, 14 points).
