Houston Dynamo defender Jermaine Taylor converted his penalty kick as the Jamaica national team won a penalty shootout, 4-3, against Trinidad and Tobago to capture the Caribbean Football Union Caribbean Cup on Tuesday in Montego Bay. With the regional title, Jamaica has qualified for the 2016 Copa America Centenario, the 100th edition of the Copa America to be held in the United States.
The Reggae Boyz sealed the shootout win in dramatic fashion as Philadelphia Union goalkeeper Andre Blake stopped Cardiff City forward Kenwyne Jones’ decisive penalty kick. It is Jamaica’s sixth Caribbean Cup title and third win in the last four editions.
Prior to its win over Trinidad and Tobago in the final, Jamaica won Group B after drawing Martinique, 1-1, defeating Antigua and Barbuda, 3-0, and securing a 2-0 triumph over Haiti. Taylor started all four matches in a seven-day span.
Meanwhile, Dynamo midfielders Luis Garrido and Boniek Garcia both featured for Honduras in its 0-0 draw against China on Tuesday at Tianhe Stadium in Guangzhou. Garrido played 90 minutes while Garcia entered at halftime and played the final 45 minutes for Los Catrachos.
