PREVIEW
The Houston Dynamo will continue their tradition of facing Mexican opposition when they host reigning CONCACAF Champions League winners Monterrey on Sunday night at Robertson Stadium. Houston has a winning all-time record against Mexican clubs at home and will be looking to regain momentum after a 1-0 loss at Vancouver last week. Monterrey is coming off of a 2-0 win over Santos Laguna last Saturday.
REFEREE: Jasen Anno
INTERNATIONAL CALL-UPS: HOU: Carlo Costly (Honduras; through Sept. 2), Andre Hainault (Canada; through Sept. 6), Jermaine Taylor (Jamaica; through Sept. 2), Je-Vaughn Watson (Jamaica; through Sept. 2) … Walter Ayovà (Ecuador; through Sept. 6), Dárvin Chávez (Mexico U-22; through Sept. 6), Aldo de Nigris (Mexico; through Sept. 4), Hiram Mier (Mexico U-22; through Sept. 6), Sergio Pérez (Mexico; through Sept. 4), Jesús Zavala (Mexico; through Sept. 4).
HEAD-TO-HEAD
ALL-TIME (1 meeting): Dynamo 1 win, 2 goals … Monterrey 0 wins, 1 goal … Ties 0
- The teams' first and only prior meeting was in the 2009 Dynamo Charities Cup, with the Dynamo taking a 2-1 win.
- The 2009 match between the clubs turned feisty, with five yellow cards and four red cards (two to players on the bench at the time) issued. Houston’s Geoff Cameron opened the scoring, but Jesús Zavala tied the match for Monterrey in the 82nd minute. The Dynamo responded with the winning strike from Dominic Oduro in the 85th minute to take the match.
- Coaches record: Victor Manuel Vucetich v HOU: P1 W0 L1 D0 … Dominic Kinnear vs. MNT: P1 W1 L0 D0
PRE-GAME NOTES
- Due to the proximity between Houston and Monterrey, youth clubs from the respective organizations have already played this year. On July 5, Monterrey beat the Dynamo 1-0 in a U-17 match. On July 10, the Dynamo Reserves returned the favor with a 3-1 win over the Monterrey U-20s.
- Dynamo midfielder Josue Soto was raised in Monterrey from an early age and as a teenager was offered a contract with the club’s U-20 squad. Soto turned down the offer in order to attend Prepa Tec High School. He later joined the Dynamo Academy and played collegiate soccer in the U.S. before he was signed as a home-grown player in January 2011. [More on Soto's Monterrey connection]
- Teams will be allowed 10 substitutions during the match, with no re-entry except in the case of a goalkeeper injury.
UP NEXT: BEASTS OF THE EAST
The Dynamo return to league play next weekend and will play
consecutive road games against the top two teams in the Eastern Conference, second-place
Sporting Kansas City (Sept. 10) and the first-place Columbus Crew (Sept. 14). Houston has not won on the
road this year but has earned five ties in six road games against the Eastern
Conference.
