Match Preview- NER

HOUSTON (Oct. 1, 2024) – Houston Dynamo FC return to Shell Energy Stadium to host the New England Revolution on Wednesday, Oct. 2 in a midweek cross-conference matchup.

Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. CT, and tickets are available via SeatGeek HERE. Fans can also enjoy $1 Hot Dog Night on Wednesday evening.

The Dynamo clinched their place in the Audi 2024 MLS Cup Playoffs on Saturday due to FC Dallas’ loss versus Orlando City SC earlier in the evening. The feat marks the first time Houston has qualified for the postseason in consecutive years since 2013.

The Dynamo currently sit sixth in the Western Conference with 48 points and a 13-9-9 (WLD) record, while Houston is three points away from matching their total from last season. The team finds themselves just two points behind fourth place and homefield advantage in the first round of the playoffs with three regular season matches remaining.

The Dynamo are undefeated in 14 of their last 17 MLS matches, while finding the back of the net 30 times over that stretch.

Additionally, Houston continues to boast one of the best defensive records so far this season. The team has allowed just 34 goals this season, which is tied for the fewest in the Western Conference and tied for the second fewest in MLS. Houston also leads MLS with 59.6 percent possession across the season, allowing the Dynamo to control matches and dictate pace of play.

Houston will look to bounce back after a 1-0 road loss to Seattle Sounders FC on Saturday night. Despite a strong start to the match by the Dynamo and 90 minutes that saw them dominate possession and final third entries, it was a Paul Rothrock goal in the 22nd minute that sent Houston home with no points.

One lineup note for Wednesday is that defender Griffin Dorsey will miss Wednesday’s match versus New England for a suspension due to yellow card accumulation.

New England remains in playoff contention and enters Wednesday’s match with a 9-17-4 (WLD) record and 31 points. The Revolution are coming off a 1-0 home victory over Nashville SC thanks to an 86th-minute winner and first goal of the season from Brandon Bye, assisted by two of New England's summer signings, Luca Langoni and Alhassan Yusuf. The result leaves the Revs in 14th place in the Eastern Conference, six points behind the playoff line with four regular season games remaining. New England’s squad features Giacomo Vrioni and Carles Gil, who have combined for 15 goals and 11 assists this season.

Wednesday’s meeting will mark New England’s first trip to Shell Energy Stadium since September 2022 when Houston earned a 3-1 victory behind goals from Fafà Picault (brace) and Darwin Quintero.

The Dynamo have a former Revs player on their roster in midfielder Latif Blessing, who spent a short spell with the club during the 2023 season, earning 15 starts in 16 appearances in all competitions before being traded to Toronto FC in July 2023.

Houston next travels to face St. Louis CITY SC on Saturday, Oct. 5, before returning home for a Decision Day matchup versus LA Galaxy on Saturday, Oct. 19.
