Houston Dynamo midfielder Adam Moffat has only scored six goals in five MLS seasons, but No. 6 will likely be featured on highlight reels of top goals for many years to come.
Moffat's 40-yard blast that opened the scoring in a 2-1 win over the Portland Timbers last Sunday was hailed by fans as the Goal of the Week for Week 22 in one of the most lopsided fan ballots of the year.
Veteran goalscorer Brian Ching, Moffat's teammate on the Dynamo, said that the strike "will be up for Goal of the Year." Judging by the fan response, Ching is not far from the truth. Moffat's goal claimed 71 percent of the votes, well ahead of the Red Bulls duo of Thierry Henry (10 percent) and Joel Lindpere (7 percent).
There was more to the goal than just aesthetics for the Glasgow, Scotland native. It also came against his former club, the Timbers, who traded him to the Dynamo on July 21 after giving him just four sub appearances since picking him up in the Expansion Draft.
"Personally, I’m happy to score against my old team," Moffat said after the match. “It was a good strike that went in. I was happy and delighted, but like I said, it was the three points that mattered.”
