The opening games of the second round of Generation adidas Cup Central Region qualifying took place Friday at Houston Sports Park, with U-15 and U-17 teams taking to the field.
U-15: Columbus Crew SC 4, Toronto FC 0
Crew SC opened the day strong with four first-half goals against Toronto. TFC earned a penalty in the second period, but the Columbus goalkeeper was equal to it to keep his clean sheet.
U-17: Chicago Fire 2, Columbus Crew SC 1
Chicago captain Diego Mendoza put the Fire on the board in the 24th minute by finishing a penalty kick earned by Andy Lomelli. Two minutes later, Chicago's Alex Monis scored a rebound opportunity to double the lead. Maouloune Goumballe put Columbus on the board in the 73rd minute, but Chicago held on for the victory.
U-15: Chicago Fire 7, Texas ODP 0
Erik Kocs-Washburn opened up the scoring for Chicago in the tenth minute. A minute later, Luca Iaccino capitalized on a defensive error to make it 2-0. Another goal in the 25th minute earned Iaccino a brace..
Forward Ernest Mensah recorded a hat trick with goals in the 29th, 41st and 67th minutes. After subbing in during the second half, Brian Gutierrez finished a low-driven pass from the right side to complete Chicago’s scoring.
U-17: Colorado Rapids 2, Houston Dynamo 0
Luke Mitchell gave Colorado the lead in the 20th minute, looping in a header off a free kick. The Dynamo pushed hard for an equalizer the rest of the way, but Jairo Barreras sealed the match in second half stoppage time as he scored on a counter attack.
U-17: Toronto FC 1, FC Dallas 0
In one of the tightest affairs of the day, second half substitute Jacen Russell-Rowe broke through the FC Dallas defense in the 54th minute and beat the ‘keeper to give Toronto FC a goal against the run of play. Dallas found themselves on the doorstep of an equalizer, but TFC held on to remain undefeated in qualifying.
U-15: Houston Dynamo 1, Colorado Rapids 1 (Dynamo win 4-2 on PKs)
The Dynamo took an early lead via a strike from 12 yards by Gerardo Martinez, but Colorado evened things up early in the second half as Mario Ramirez headed in a free kick. After regulation, goalkeeper Ismael Espinosa made two penalty kick saves to give Houston the win.
