The Houston Dynamo remained perfect at home this season with a 4-1 win over the New York Red Bulls tonight at BBVA Compass Stadium thanks to a hat trick from forward Erick Torres.
After conceding the opening goal at the 13th minute, Houston answered a minute later with a headed goal from defender Dylan Remick, the first of his career. From there on, it was all Torres.
The Dynamo led at halftime 2-1 thanks to a goal from Torres on a penalty kick, his second such goal in as many games. He gave the Dynamo a two-goal lead in the 56th minute after collecting a deflected shot and rifling a right-footed shot through the hands of New York goalkeeper Luis Robles. Then, in the first minute of stoppage time, Torres put the game out of reach with a free kick from just outside the box.
New York opened the scoring in the 13th minute when midfielder Sacha Kljestan delivered an incisive pass to forward Bradley Wright-Phillips outside the box. Wright-Phillips dribbled the ball into the right side of the box and beat Dynamo goalkeeper Tyler Deric into the bottom left corner of the goal.
Remick’s goal came off of a corner kick a minute later. Dynamo midfielder Alex played a low pass to forward Mauro Manotas, who returned the ball, and Alex’s cross met Remick at the six-yard box where he buried a header into the upper right corner of the goal. It was Alex’s fourth assist of the season, matching his career total prior to 2017.
As the first half was coming to an end, Manotas drew a penalty on the edge of the 18-yard box. Torres played a short pass that was slightly behind the Colombian, but Manotas dragged the ball past a Red Bulls defender before New York defender Damien Perrinelle brought him down inside the penalty area. Torres stepped to the spot and converted with a right-footed shot to the top left corner of the net.
After spending the last two weeks focusing on improved play during the second half of games, the Dynamo put that effort into action after the break. Torres’ two goals over the last 45 minutes were just the second and third scored by the team after halftime this year, and it marked the first game this season in which the Dynamo outscored their opponent after the half.
The Dynamo will continue the 2017 season, presented by 76, on Saturday, April 8 at 1:00 p.m. CDT against New England Revolution at Gillette Stadium. They return home on Saturday, April 15 to host Minnesota United FC at 7:30 p.m. CDT.
