PORTLAND, Oregon (April 30, 2019) – Rio Grande Valley FC defeated Portland Timbers 2 on Tuesday by a score of 2-1. The victory moves the Toros up to fourth in the USL Championship Western Conference Standings.
With the win, the Toros extend their unbeaten streak to five games on the bounce.
RGV FC kicked off the match with a goal from Wilmer A. Cabrera in the 9th minute after a set piece by Isidro Martinez. Martinez took the free kick from outside the box and found Cabrera, who turned and blasted a right footed shot into the back of the net, scoring his second career goal.
Timbers 2 equalized the match in the 71st minute when Eryk Williamson sent a cross into the center of the box and found Modou Jadama, who’s shot beat Tyler Deric in the bottom corner.
The Toros struck back quickly through Carlos Small who picked up the blocked shot from Jesus Enriquez and scored the Toro’s second of the match. Timbers 2 Max Ornstil blocked the initial shot but Small beat him to the loose ball and sent it to the bottom left corner, restoring the Toro’s lead, 2-1. Small’s goal marked his second goal coming off the bench.
Portland had the advantage in overall possession, 58.5%-41.5% throughout the match but RGV’s defending line was solid and did not allow the Timbers II attack to get in behind.
Houston Dynamo loanee, Kevin Garcia, was the man of the match, registering 11 clearances on the night and adding two tackles, one block and winning 83.3% of duels.
Toros captain, Kyle Adams played a key role on the defensive line as well, totaling seven clearances, two tackles, one interception and two blocks.
Maalique Foster was the primary threat for Timbers 2, totaling four shots and one on target.
