The Rio Grande Valley FC Toros lost 1-0 to San Antonio FC in this year’s USL season opener. Billy Forbes scored the lone goal in the 14th minute.
Weather conditions forced both teams to adjust to the gusting winds. The first chance of the night came to San Antonio FC. RGV’s Calle Brown denied San Antonio’s Cesar Elizondo in the 8th minute of the game. San Antonio kept knocking and found the back of the net in the 14th minute. Billy Forbes scored after an Elizondo assist.
With the wind now in their favor, the Toros sought to tie the game in the second half. Toros’ Eric Bird had two opportunities in the 52nd minute but could not bring both teams even. San Antonio’s Matt Cardone denied Eric Bird’s header once again in the 57th minute.
After the ball bounced around in the box, it found RGV’s Kyle Murphy who blasted his shot into the goalie’s right post. The Toros kept the high pressure in search of the goal. TJ Casner had his chance to be the Toros’ hero in the final seconds of the game. His header was blocked by San Antonio’s goalie and gave San Antonio their first win over the RGV FC Toros.
The Toros ended the night with more total shots than San Antonio FC, 11 to 2 shots, but could not capitalize. From those 11 shots, 4 were on target. The Toros had 61 percent total possession of the ball.
The Rio Grande Valley FC Toros hit the road next and will face Tulsa Roughnecks on April 1.
