Rio Grande Valley FC’s Todd Wharton claimed the USL Fans’ Choice Goal of the Week to claim the honor for Week 8, as his game-winning goal against the Swope Park Rangers edged out Phoenix Rising FC’s Shaun Wright-Phillips by less than a percentage point in the online poll.
Wharton earned 33.9 percent of the vote for his first goal of the season, receiving a back-heel pass from midfielder Eric Bird after a throw-in and rifling his shot into the upper corner.
Wright-Phillips’ goal, which also proved the game-winner against OKC Energy FC, 33.7 percent of the poll conducted online at USLSoccer.com that concluded on Thursday morning. Tulsa Roughnecks FC’s Juan Pablo Caffa took third with 13 percent for his picture-perfect free kick against Vancouver Whitecaps FC 2 in the Roughnecks’ 3-1 win last Thursday night.
