The Rio Grande Valley FC Toros allowed two goals in stoppage time to OKC Energy FC for a 3-2 loss in their first-ever playoff game on Saturday night at HEB Park.
RGV FC jumped out to a first half lead in the 38th minute as Dynamo Academy product Memo Rodriguez picked up a loose ball in the midfield circle. He led the break the other way, and slipped a pass into the box as two defenders converged on him. Forward Ruben Luna latched onto it and hit a left-footed shot past the charging keeper to cap a half largely controlled by the home team.
OKC answered in the 73rd minute with a goal from Linus Olsen, but RGV took the lead again just five minutes later as Eric Bird juggled a partially-cleared cross 18 yards from goal and found the bottom corner with a volley.
The Toros looked to be headed for the next round of the USL Playoffs as the fourth official raised his board for five minutes of added time at the end of the second half, but a pair of goals from Colin Bonner sunk the first year team. Off a long throw-in from near midfield, the ball bounced untouched at the edge of the box in a crowd and bounded over the defense. Bonner was just behind the line and beat goalkeeper Devin Perales to the ball to head in the equalizer. Bonner popped up again late in the added time with a bullet header off a corner kick to the near post to secure the win for Energy FC.
