The first eight matches of the 2010 SUM U-17 Cup took place Friday night at Centennial Park in Friendswood, Texas. The 16 teams are competing in four groups of four, with the group winners advancing to Tuesday's semifinals.
Due to the short time frame of the tournament, matches are being played with 30-minute halves. Ties will be broken by a shootout, with the winning team earning two points and the losing team one point. Here are the results from the opening night:
Group A
D.C. United 1, Chicago Fire 1 (DC won 5-3 on PKs)
In a highly anticipated match between two premier academy programs, D.C. United defeated the Chicago Fire 5-3 in penalty kicks. Julian Griggs put D.C. on the board in the seventh minute when Dario Redondo gave him a through ball that Griggs one-timed into the net. Although United dominated possession for much of the first half, the Fire managed to equalize in the 38th minute when David Caban found Andrew Conner, who slid the ball past United goalkeeper Dakota Niedermeier. In the shootout, Niedermeier dove to his right to deny Chicago's Daniel Lojeck and give D.C. an opportunity to win. Needing one more goal to end the shootout, Marco Hurtado calmly stepped up for United and placed the ball passed a sprawling Sam Euler.

Colorado Rapids 3, San Jose Earthquakes 2
It was the James Rogers show for Colorado tonight, as the Rapids defeated the San Jose Earthquakes 3-2.
After scoring seven goals for Real Salt Lake in the 2008 SUM U-17 Cup, Rogers scored two in the first half tonight for Colorado. His first came in the fifth minute, when Santiago Velez found a wide-open Rogers for an easy goal. San Jose came back minutes later when Israel Ayala stole the ball from a Colorado defender and fired a shot past the Rapids goalkeeper from 25 yards. The score was tied for only three minutes, as Rogers found another opening behind the defense and netted his second of the game.
In the 29th minute, Velez earned a penalty kick for Colorado after he was taken down by Cesar Mendoza in the box. Velez stepped up and buried the penalty kick to extend the lead to 3-1 before the half. With Rogers sidelined with a leg injury for most of the second half, the Earthquakes were able to gain some momentum. In the 51st minute, Jose Lopez gave a looping ball to Sam Engs, who headed the ball past Alex Chapin at the back post. The goal was not enough for San Jose, though, as Colorado managed to keep the ball away from the net for the final 10 minutes and hold on for a 3-2 win.

Group B
FC Dallas 1, Seattle Sounders 1 (Seattle won 4-3 on PKs)
The Seattle Sounders were looking to crash the party as one of the few teams playing in their first SUM U-17 Cup, and they made a big statement by knocking off last year's runner-up, FC Dallas, 4-3 on penalty kicks.
Seattle scored early on a goal from Aaron Kovar, a speedy left-sided midfielder who caused trouble for the FC Dallas defense in the first half. A big and physical Sounders team outmuscled FC Dallas in the first half, but the North Texas side came back strong in the second half behind captain Samuel Coleman.
Coleman, who scored eight goals for FC Dallas in USSF play last season, tied the game in the 38th minute with a free kick from nearly 25 yards out. In penalty kicks, Rodney Greiling made a tremendous save when it counted most and got a friendly bounce off a post, and Seattle knocked off the highly-rated FC Dallas squad 4-3 on penalty kicks.

Columbus Crew 1, Philadelphia Union 1 (Columbus won 4-3 on PKs)
The Columbus Crew opened their SUM U-17 Cup campaign with a thrilling victory in penalty kicks over the Philadelphia Union. Philadelphia opened the scoring off of a Melvin Snoh goal in the seventh minute. The speedy forward snuck in behind the Crew defense to connect with a cross from midfielder Zack Shiposh.
Philadelphia's quickness on and off the ball in the first half put the Crew under pressure, with much of the attack created by central midfielder Jimmy McLaughlin. The Crew made several changes at half and came out the stronger side.
The Crew were rewarded late in the game on a brilliant strike by Chris Davis, who moved from up front to outside midfielder at the half. Davis settled a loose ball at the top of the penalty area on his thigh and struck a half-volley that rocketed by the Union goalkeeper Zack Steffan.
The game moved to penalty kicks, where Columbus goalkeeper Nick Straight, a halftime sub, stopped John Kuhmer's shot, and Zack Shiposh hit the crossbar. Columbus converted four spot kicks to prevail and take the extra point.

Chivas USA 1, New England Revolution 0
In the Group C opener, Chivas USA came away with a 1-0 win thanks to a Victor Vazquez goal in the 25th minute. Chivas dominated much of the match and was unlucky to not net several more goals. Late in the first half, Steve Palacios struck the ball from outside the 18-yard box, but New England goalkeeper Ryan Simpson made a diving save to deflect the shot away. Chivas USA's Jose Luis Martinez found an opening in the second half, but his shot went just wide of the net. Chivas still held on for a win and three points.

Houston Dynamo 3, Toronto FC 0
The hometown team gave its crowd much to cheer about, as the Houston Dynamo rolled to a 3-0 victory in their opening match of the SUM U-17 Cup. Miguel Zapata put the Dynamo on the board in the ninth minute when his strike sailed past Toronto goalkeeper Justin Silveria.
In the 25th minute, Bryan Salazar crossed the ball to Isaiah Noreiga, who one-timed the ball past Silveria. Salazar netted a goal of his own five minutes later after receiving the ball from Alex Gonzalez. Salazar took two dribbles and buried the shot to put the game out of reach.
Although Houston struggled to maintain its intensity level in the second half, the Dynamo defense prove too much for Toronto, and Houston cruised to an easy victory on the opening night of the tournament.

After a frantic start, the KC Wizards Juniors overcame a mid-match lull to defeat the LA Galaxy in their first match of the 2010 SUM U-17 Cup. Kansas City’s Nathan Opperman caused fits for the Galaxy with his disruptive play early in the first half, but LA opened the scoring with a curling 20-yard free kick from Eric Gonzalez before the interval.
Derek Schrick proved to be the hero for the Wizards Juniors with a pair of second-half strikes, including one in stoppage time, to give Kansas City a 2-1 victory over the kids from Carson.

Real Salt Lake opened their 2010 SUM U-17 Cup with a come-from-behind 2-1 victory over the New York Red Bulls Friday night.
New York’s bruising defense controlled the game early. Its offense, run by dynamic midfielder Russell Canouse, made its presence felt when Brandon Allen fired a shot past RSL goalkeeper Carson Elliot in the ninth minute to give New York a 1-0.
RSL persevered, though, and it paid off in a big way when Richard Velasco equalized late in the first half. The comeback was sealed by an incredible left-footed shot off the right post from 18 yards out by Maikon Orellana.
