The second night of matches of the 2010 SUM U-17 Cup took place Saturday night at Centennial Park in Friendswood, Texas. The 16 teams are competing in four groups of four, with the group winners advancing to Tuesday's semifinals.
Due to the short time frame of the tournament, matches are being played with 30-minute halves. Ties will be broken by a shootout, with the winning team earning two points and the losing team one point. Here are the results from the opening night:
Group A
D.C. United 2, Colorado Rapids 1
Both teams, previously unbeaten, battled it out on the Centennial Park fields, with D.C. taking an early lead from a Yaw Amankwa goal in the fifth minute. Colorado came back before the end of the first half with a beautifully headed goal from forward Eric Kronenberg. The game went into the half tied 1-1 and stayed that way until the final minute of regulation.
Second-half sub Romain Gall, a small but talented central midfielder for D.C., raced down the right wing and floated a high cross into the center of the area. The Rapids netminder could not reach to punch it away, and Patrick Foss rose to head the ball into the open net to give D.C. a dramatic win. United heads into its final group game with five points and the lead in Group A. If D.C. wins its Monday night match against San Jose, it will clinch first place in the group and a spot in the semifinals.

Chicago Fire 1, San Jose Earthquakes 0
It was a defensive battle in Friendswood between the Chicago Fire and the San Jose Earthquakes. Both goalkeepers made tremendous saves, including a sprawling save by Earthquakes goalkeeper Jesus Guzman in the 47th minute, to keep their squads in the match. Luck was not on San Jose's side though, as a handball was called in the box in the 50th minute, giving Chicago a penalty kick. Kellen Gully stepped up and fired the shot past Guzman, giving Chicago the lead, the win, and a much-needed three points. Chicago must defeat Colorado on Monday night and have D.C. either lose or tie for the Fire to claim first place in the group.

Columbus Crew 2, FC Dallas 1
FC Dallas entered the tournament as the favorite to win Group B, but after losing 2-1 to the Columbus Crew Saturday night, they sit in third place and need a win against Philadelphia on Monday to avoid finishing last. Chris Davis put Columbus on the board in the 12th minute with his second goal of the tournament. Columbus tacked on a second goal in the 47th minute when Raymond Olivarria crossed the ball to the front of the box, where Al Crognole fired a shot past the Dallas goalkeeper. Bobby Eddet tallied a goal for Dallas in the 49th minute, but it was too little, too late as Columbus held on for the victory.

Seattle Sounders 2, Philadelphia Union 1
Seattle continued its strong play with a 2-1 victory over the Philadelphia Union thanks to a strong defensive effort from the Sounders back line and goalkeeper Rodney Greiling. Both of Seattle's goals were courtesy of defenders - Michael Gallagher and Ian Lange, respectively. Midfielder Aaron Kovar, a standout for Seattle thus far, delivered an inswinging corner kick that Gallagher redirected with a sharp header for the first goal. Lange then got on the end of a loose ball in the box after another Kovar corner to give Sounders FC a 2-0 halftime lead.
Philadelphia rallied in the second half after inserting many of the previous evening's starters, including Friday's goalscorer Melvin Snoh and standout midfielder Jimmy McLaughlin. Midfielder Colin O'Neill connected on a cross to bring the Union within a goal, but outstanding goalkeeping by Greiling preserved the victory.

Chivas USA 3, Toronto FC 0
Chivas USA continued their strong form in this year's U-17 Cup, defeating Toronto FC with three second-half goals. Toronto had an opportunity in the first half, when Marcus Lees was fouled in the box to earn a penalty kick. Unfortunately for Toronto, Tristan Jackman stepped up and fired the shot right at the goalkeeper, Jack McGuire, and the game remained scoreless.
The second half was dominated by Chivas USA. In the 40th minute, Marcial Cazares drilled a corner kick into the box, and Ivan Delgado headed the ball past Toronto goalkeeper Justin Silveria to put Chivas on the board. Ten minutes later, Pedro Velasquez played a beautiful through-ball to Kevin de la Torre, who met the ball in stride and found the back of the net. Steve Palacios added a third goal for Chivas in the 60th minute. Chivas will now face the Houston Dynamo on Monday night to determine the group winner.

Houston Dynamo 3, New England Revolution 1
The Houston Dynamo continued their impressive run in this year's U-17 Cup, defeating the New England Revolution 3-1 to earn three points and a share of first place with Chivas USA. Tamay Sanchez was the man of the match, scoring all three Dynamo goals.
In the 11th minute, Sanchez cut through two defenders before being dragged down in the penalty box. Sanchez stepped up to the penalty kick and fired a laser past Revs goalkeeper Ryan Simpson. New England tied the game in the 42nd minute when Diego Fagundez split two defenders to find Felix DeBonna streaking through the box. DeBonna, who only entered the game two minutes earlier, placed the ball past Dynamo goalkeeper Graham Wheeler and leveled the score.
The Revs' celebration was short-lived, though, as two minutes later, Sanchez stole the ball from a New England midfielder, took two steps, and fired a shot to the upper corner of the net. To cap things off, Sanchez picked up a ball from Isaiah Noreiga in the 56th minute and scored a Donovan-esque type goal, rocketing the ball from twelve yards out over the goalkeeper's head. Sanchez is currently the tournament's leading scorer and a front-runner for the tournament MVP award.
The Dynamo will take on Chivas USA at 6:30 p.m. on Monday night in a winner-take-all match for Group C.

After a first half marked by frustrating, unproductive play by both sides, the Galaxy and Real Salt Lake both broke through with goals in the second half, but only RSL would leave a winner after defeating LA on PKs.
The Galaxy’s Dyllan Stevens opened the scoring with an unassisted strike created from sheer determination to push his way through the defense. The lead was short-lived, as RSL struck back only one minute later when Junior Jbopau received a skillful, nearly no-look cross from Maikon Orellana to tie things up. Tied at the end of regulation, the teams went to penalty kicks, where RSL emerged victorious for the second game in a row.

On the rebound from last night’s loss to Real Salt Lake, the New York Red Bulls dominated the Kansas City Wizards Juniors in a resounding 2-0 victory. New York’s Ethan Decker opened up the scoring in the 43rd minute with a fantastic strike from just inside the 18-yard box. Two minutes later, powerful forward Brandon Allen was the beneficiary of some nice combination play in the midfield to make the score 2-0. The goal was Allen's second of the tournament. The Wizards never gained enough momentum to counter New York’s 1-2 punch, and the score held for the remainder of the game.
