Two Brazos Valley Cavalry FC players, forward Brandon Guhl and defender Carlos Viveros, received 2018 PDL All-Southern Conference Team honors for the essential roles they played in the team’s exceptional second season.
Cavalry FC is the Professional Development League (PDL) affiliate of the Houston Dynamo, serving as an amateur U-23 side. The summer league allows college players to continue their development without forfeiting NCAA eligibility.
The Cavalry finished the 2018 season with a 9-2-3 record (30 points), first in the Mid-South Division, but ended with a 2-1 playoff loss to SIM Aguilas in the Southern Conference Semifinals.
Brazos Valley forward Brandon Guhl took home conference Best XI honors and defender Carlos Viveros was one of 11 players to receive an honorable mention.
Guhl finished the 2018 season leading the team both in goals, with 10, and assists, with five. The forward, who was also named 2017 BIG EAST Co-Offensive Player of the Year at Butler, led an offense that tied for the second-highest mark across the entire PDL with 42 goals.
Viveros also assisted the Cavalry’s offense, with three goals and three assists of his own on the season, including a goal in the team’s final regular season game that helped Brazos Valley defeat Texas United 4-1 to secure the Cavalry’s first playoff appearance and divisional silverware.
The former Eastern New Mexico University player was an instrumental part of the team’s stellar defense, which allowed Mid-South Division-best 19 goals, and led the team in minutes played.
