The Houston Dash have acquired United States Women’s National Team midfielder Carli Lloyd from the Western New York Flash in exchange for midfielder Becky Edwards, defender Whitney Engen, and a third round pick in the 2016 NWSL College Draft, the club announced today.
Lloyd, 32, is currently with the USWNT for the 2014 CONCACAF Women’s Championship. The Delran, New Jersey, native has compiled 177 caps for her country, scoring 51 goals. In 2008, Lloyd was named the U.S. Soccer Female Athlete of the Year after she scored the game-winning goal in overtime against Brazil in the Olympic gold medal match that year. Lloyd was an Olympic hero again in 2012, scoring both goals in the United States’ 2-1 victory over Japan in the gold medal match. Lloyd scored 15 international goals in total for 2012, which earned her a place on the shortlist for the 2012 FIFA Women’s World Player of the Year.
The attacking midfielder finished top 10 in the NWSL with five assists last season, and was in the top 10 in goals for both 2013 (10 goals) and 2014 (8 goals). Lloyd graduated from Rutgers University as the school leader in points, goals and shots. Prior to the formation of the NWSL, Lloyd spent time with the Chicago Red Stars, Sky Blue FC and the Atlanta Beat in Women’s Professional Soccer (WPS).
Edwards, 26, started 23 matches for the Dash in 2014, registering two assists. Engen, 26, started 11 matches after joining the club midway through the season from Swedish club Tyresö FF.
