The Houston Dash acquired midfielders Taylor Comeau and Sofia Huerta from the Chicago Red Stars for FW Christen Press' rights and a conditional natural first-round draft pick in the 2020 NWSL College Draft, the club announced today.
Huerta has scored 22 goals and tallied 11 assists in 74 appearances for the Red Stars since entering the league as the no. 11 overall selection in the 2015 NWSL College Draft. The midfielder has represented both the Mexican Women's National Team and U.S. Women's National Team – for whom she recently earned her seventh cap in the U.S. 2-1 victory over China last Tuesday. The Boise, Idaho native was allowed to switch her affiliation from Mexico to the Unites States last fall by FIFA.
Comeau has appeared in 55 league games since entering the league as an amateur player for Portland Thorns FC in 2015. The midfielder earned a full contract the following year with the Red Stars after entering the preseason as a trialist. The Los Gatos, Calif. native was key in securing Chicago's spot in the 2016 postseason after scoring a game-winning goal against the Orlando Pride, snapping a three-game losing streak that summer.
The Red Stars will receive forward Christen Press' rights, who spent the first half of the NWSL season in Sweden with Kopparbergs/Göteborg FC. The Dash acquired her NWSL player rights in a three-team trade on Jan. 18. In addition to the rights to Press, Chicago will receive Houston's natural first round draft pick in the 2020 NWSL College Draft.
In a corresponding move, Houston waived midfielder Claire Falknor and defender Alli Murphy. Falknor was signed prior to the 2017 NWSL regular season and Murphy was signed as a discovery player on March 24.
Comeau and Huerta will be available for selection when Houston returns to league play at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, June 22 against Portland Thorns FC at BBVA Compass Stadium. Tickets for the match start at $19 and are available at HoustonDashSoccer.com.
