HOUSTON (April 2, 2025) – Houston Dynamo 2 captain and midfielder Diego Gonzalez was named the MLS NEXT Pro Player of the Month for March, the league announced today.
The Dynamo Academy product has been key in Houston’s attack, contributing to four goals in four matches (two goals and two assists) to start the season. The midfielder is currently tied for first in the league with 15 key passes and tied for second in the league with two assists.
Two of those contributions came in Houston’s 5-1 victory over reigning MLS NEXT Pro Champions, North Texas SC, on March 23. Gonzalez scored a goal on a clever free kick where he caught the goalkeeper by surprise with a curling shot to the near post, while assisting on Lukas Bruegmann’s goal earlier in the match.
Gonzalez’s first assist of the month came in the team’s 3-1 home opener victory versus Sporting Kansas City II, setting up 15-year-old Mattheo Dimareli for Houston’s second goal of the match. He then added to his tally towards the end of the month, scoring his second goal of the season from the penalty spot versus Minnesota United FC 2.
Last season, Gonzalez delivered a breakout campaign, finishing the regular season with six goals and 10 assists, while tying for the most assists and key passes (78) in league play, which earned him 2024 MLS NEXT Pro Best XI and an MVP finalist honors.
Dynamo 2 currently sit second in the Western Conference standings with six points and lead the league with the most goals (eight) this season.
Dynamo 2 continue their two-match homestand versus LAFC2 on Sunday, April 6 at SaberCats Stadium, with kickoff scheduled for 6:00 p.m. CT. Free tickets for the match are available HERE.
